In less enlightened times, the best way to impress women was to own a really “hot” car but then women wised up and realised it was better to buy their own, writes Kathy Malherbe on motoring.co.za.
And a very enlightened dealership and lifestyle centre “wised up” right alongside these women a long way back. A day of celebration of women and their cars, turned into an annual and much-anticipated event.
Which is how it came about that Sandown Motors put 120 top female clients in the driving seats of their latest Mercedes-Benz models and took them on a road trip...
The cavalcade of 30 glorious cars (and women) was captained very ably by a serious bit of eye-candy in the form of Corné Krige. He led the Madame Mercedes Musical Mystery Tour in a glorious CLK350 Cabriolet, gathering the directionally challenged back into the fold when necessary and ensuring their safety at all times.
Corné also blew several penalties and yellow cards for transgressions ranging from R20 for failing a minor technical challenge to R1 000 for “overtaking the lead car”. It was all for a good cause and the Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired was the recipient charity.
Music was the common denominator during the rally - starting with a musical send off at Sandown Motors’ Lifestyle Centre through the musical quiz (some of us remembering music from the 1950's…) during the trip.
A high note came during the tea/pit stop at Rust en Vrede where the ladies were greeted by the Incredible Hunk, Ryk Neethling. During the decadent tea on the lawns the rather aptly named musical group Perfect Score serenaded the newly emergent rally drivers.
Debbie Miller, Marketing Manager for Sandown Motors Western Cape, said: “The Ladies’ Day is an opportunity to celebrate our relationship with our top female customers.
”We say ‘thank-you’ by spoiling them with an afternoon of absolute luxury, pleasure and fun. We have a loyal female customer base and we like to remind them of their importance to us.”
From the mouth of one of the babes: “From the deliciously decadent Lindt chocolates through to the high tea at Rust en Vrede and the gorgeous superstars, the day was perfect! Mercedes-Benz certainly got it right.
”The day unfolded with the same gentle purr as the CLK I got to drive.”
Footnote: There were no bumps or scrapes, no dicing at robots, no speed violations and no arguing about directions. Women drivers rule, OK?
